چکیده

Silvertown portrays ES as slippery slope from conceptualization [3_TD$DIFF], to valuation [4_TD$DIFF], to monetization and cumulating towards an endpoint of commodification. We disagree with this simplistic summary of the ES literature. The ES framework has stimulated diverse deliberation on why and how we value nature [2], the equity implications of how non-market and market values are distributed and managed [3], and how best we can communicate often overlooked non-monetary values (and why indeed they are overlooked) [4]. None of these necessarily implies nor demands the ultimate commodification of ES [2].

Ecosystem Services Go Beyond Money and Markets: Reply to Silvertown.

Silvertown [1] provides an outspoken critique on the concept of ecosystem services (ES), feeding a longstanding debate about how to express and conserve the value of nature for humans [2–4]. The paper raises valid concerns about ES monetization, its failure to ‘capture the multifaceted sense in which people value nature’, and market shortcomings in halting biodiversity loss. However, it also po...

Have Ecosystem Services Been Oversold? A Response to Silvertown.

Silvertown [1] has addressed an important topic and expresses many concerns, some of which are warranted. The paradigm of ecosystem services (ES) divides researchers and therefore debate is welcome. Since paradigms, by their very nature, constrain the way we view things, critiques of what is gained and lost in taking a particular world view is always valuable. The ‘ES paradigm’ is no exception....

ارتباط تنوع‌ زیستی جانداران بزرگ خاکزی با درختان و درختچه‌های جنگل‌های حاشیه رودخانه مارون استان خوزستان

Soil macrofauna biodiversity has an important role in ecosystem services. In order to find how soil macrofauna biodiversity is related to trees and shrubs in riparian forest of Maroon River in Khuzestan province, soil macrofauna were collected using hand-sorting procedure from 0-10 and 10-25 cm soil depths in 50 cm × 50 cm plots, 50 meters from each other on transects 100 meters apart and perpe...

Finding Common Ground for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Others in the community have criticized this strategy as a distraction from the mission of biodiversity conservation. The debate continues, and it remains unclear whether the concerns expressed are significant enough to merit the opposition. Through an exploration of the sci...

Interacting Regional-Scale Regime Shifts for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Current trajectories of global change may lead to regime shifts at regional scales, driving coupled human–environment systems to highly degraded states in terms of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. For business-as-usual socioeconomic development pathways, regime shifts are projected to occur within the next several decades, to be difficult to reverse, and to have regionalt...
